Yahoo! Facts at a Glance

The Problem Solving for Better Health® (PSBH®) program in Lithuania started in collaboration with the USA-based organization ECOLOGIA. Its regional office is located in Vilnius (ECOLOGIA Baltic Programs’ Office). The objective is to teach people to solve problems creatively by using available resources for small, manageable projects involving community members in the local problem-solving process. Participants receive knowledge on proposal writing, which helps them when they are applying for funds. The first PSBHI™ workshop in Lithuania was held in 2005.

Lithuania’s PSBH nursing program has collaborated with many hospitals throughout the country. One nurse led a project involving staff educational training to decrease the number of nosocomial infections in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Her results show that the infection rate in the NICU decreased from 67.8% to 30.7% over a one year period. The nurse’s staff education program is now a sustainable and integrated part of the nursing department’s training program at the hospital.
