Minneapolis is one of the most economically diversified and successful
communities in the country. The product of massive immigration from northern
Europe in the late 1800's, Minnesota has for the past 15 years experienced
an equally significant influx of immigrants from Southeast Asia and Africa,
most of whom have settled in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.
The area is now home to the largest Hmong and Somali populations of any
city or region between the two coasts. Projects have focused on strengthening
local ethnic and racial communities by improving access of children and
adults to the health care and human services systems.
Based upon the success of the Problem Solving for Better Health®
(PSBH®) program in Minneapolis, the community was eager
to move the program forward to the next stage, Problem Solving for Better
Health Initiative (PSBHI™), where it would become self-sustaining
and further impact the community's health through the strengthening of
its economic base. With community empowerment as its primary focus, the
Minneapolis program is on its way to becoming one of Minneapolis's most
innovative new community-development corporations.
