The Problem Solving for Better Health® (PSBH®)
program in Essex County is organized in collaboration with Babyland Family
Services/University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ). A
particular goal of the program is project sustainability. One of the most
important aspects of the PSBH process is that participants are asked not
only to identify and clearly define a problem, but also to prioritize
the importance of solving that problem in the community. Finally, they
are expected to solve the problem by accessing available community resources.
This strategy facilitates "community buy-in," and helps to ensure
that the project can be implemented with little or no support from DHF.
In Newark, most, if not all, of the projects since 1999 have been ongoing,
with no financial support from DHF.
PSBH has a number of projects in Newark that deal with the same social
issues that occur in other cities in the United States, including domestic abuse, employment/job
skills, substance abuse, and others.
