Established: 1997
The Communications for Better Health® (CBH®)
program was established at the Sir Albert Cook Medical Library, Makerere
University School of Medicine, Kampala, in 1997, and the first Uganda
Health Information Digest was distributed to 1,000 health workers.
It was the first time since 1977 that a collection of bibliographic health
information had been compiled for doctors and other health professionals
in Uganda. Until 1997, there was little access to current medical information.
Positive commentary about the Digest came from all over Uganda,
from Moyo in the far northeast to Kotido near Kenya, and from all types
of readers, including doctors, government officials, and primary school
teachers. The program received a congratulatory letter from the nation’s
First Lady, Janet Museveni.
The Uganda Health Information Digest is a demand-driven, community
outreach health information service whose content is determined by its
readers. It supports the information needs of its readers by conducting
database searches on requested topics and through the provision of full-text
delivery of articles. Topics include communicable diseases, eclampsia,
health data management, HIV/AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis.
