The Problem Solving for Better Health® (PSBH®) program in Romania focuses on the health and social problems faced by tens of thousands of unwanted and institutionalized children, orphans, and runaways left behind by the Communist regime. It was established in collaboration with the Andrea Foundation in Bucharest, in November 1998. The first workshop was held in Bucharest in February 1999; the second was held in Braila in May 2000. In November 1999, the Romanian PSBH team participated in the first international Problem Solving for Better Health Initiative™ (PSBHI™) workshop in collaboration with Bulgaria. Entitled the "Rouse-Giurgiu Initiative," the workshop was held in Rouse, Bulgaria. Separated by cultural differences and the Danube River, Rouse, in Bulgaria, and Giurgiu, in Romania, are united by the PSBH program.

Problem Solving for Better Health – Nursing™ (PSBHN™) in Romania is coordinated by the Andrea Foundation and collaborates with nursing organizations, nursing schools, the Ministry of Health, and County Directions of Public Health. Its objectives include improving the quality of health care, decreasing the prevalence of chronic disease, improving nursing care standards, promoting nursing care for children and adolescents, and preventing alcohol and smoking dependence. One nurse at M.S. Curie Hospital led a project to initiate proper documentation of patient care. The hospital has now adopted this nurse's patient record keeping tool as a standard of operation for staff. The number of medication errors at the hospital has decreased by approximately 80 percent as a result of this project.

The Communications for Better Health® (CBH®) program was established in collaboration with the Andrea Foundation in Bucharest in 2002. The first Romanian Health Information Digest was distributed to 500 medical professionals, primarily doctors and nurses. It aims to provide medical professionals with access to the latest medical information, medical techniques, and information on health service management. Produced biannually, it contains information in Romanian and English. The majority of content is devoted to nursing issues (ethics, community care, and research), and nurses frequently submit articles. Other sections include database abstracts of current health information, workshop and project information, program announcements, and locally submitted articles. Topics include cardio-thoracic surgical pathology, ethics in nursing, oncology and nursing, surgery and nursing, orthopedic surgery, and urology pathology.
