The Problem Solving for Better Health® (PSBH®) program in Nigeria was established in partnership with the Better Health Foundation, Nigeria. The objectives of the program are to relieve suffering and reduce disease burden, especially among the rural population, through the reduction of communicable diseases, especially waterborne diseases, malaria, STDs/STIs, and HIV; control of malnutrition and noncommunicable diseases, especially hypertension; and the reduction of maternal and infant mortality. Accomplishments include coverage of Southwest zone, the Akinyele Initiative in Oyo State, improvement of community awareness of hypertension, correction of visual defects, and training of village health workers and traditional birth attendants.

The Problem Solving for Better Health Initiative™ (PSBHI™) program collaborates with the Better Health Foundation of Nigeria and the Akinyele local government area. Projects on malnutrition, diarrhea, and visual impairment have been completed and replicated across the local government area.

The Communications for Better Health® (CBH®) program began in 1992. During a PSBH workshop, Mrs. O. O. Akhigbe, who was working as a medical librarian at the E. Latunde Odeku Medical Library, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, became Nigeria’s CBH Coordinator after naming literature as a resource in her health care improvement project. After receiving an equipment grant from the IBM International Foundation in 1994, the first issue of the digest, Current-Info, was produced and distributed to medical practitioners in 1995. Since then, distribution has extended to doctors and paramedical workers in Oyo State, most of them working and living in very rural areas.

The digests covers health topics such as breast feeding; communicable diseases; community medicine; family planning; maternal, child, and adolescent health; noncommunicable diseases; and primary healthcare. In addition, the digest also contains local and regional information from Health Literature in Nigeria (HELIN), a "Medical Notes" section culled from various literature sources on topical themes in biomedicine, workshop information, program announcements, abstracts of completed projects, and project reports.
