The Problem Solving for Better Health® (PSBH®)
program in Kyrgyzstan is based on a strong partnership with the Public
Association on Social Development and Adaptation of the Person in a Society
(SOTSIUM), a non-governmental organization in Bishkek, the Kyrgyzstan
capital. SOTSIUM supports a wide range of mental, physical, and social
welfare projects in the region. The support of SOTSIUM’s President,
Batma Estebesova, has been integral to the success of the program.
The program promotes action and responsibility for positive change in
the health of the community. The first workshop was held October 14-16,
2004 in Bishkek with representatives from a wide spectrum of backgrounds,
including doctors, nurses, psychologists, lawyers, and non-governmental
organization workers. A number of public health problems in the community
were addressed such as HIV/AIDS and other STDs, poor sanitary conditions
of local prisons, and first aid requirements for burn victims.
