The Problem Solving for Better Health® (PSBH®) program in India is coordinated with Health Action by People (HAP), a non-profit, non-governmental organization. The association between HAP and DHF started in 1993 and the first PSBH workshop was conducted that year. The workshops address participants with a variety of skills and backgrounds. The seventh PSBH workshop focused on nursing students at the Trivandrum Nursing College. Since March 1999, all PSBH workshops have been conducted for undergraduate medical students in various medical colleges, guiding the students toward their roles as future public health leaders.

The PSBH program devotes its energy entirely to sensitizing medical students to the problem-solving methodology. Each student develops a protocol related to his/her research question. Nearly a third of the projects are selected for implementation. Rather than individual implementation, group activity is encouraged, thus promoting teamwork.

To date, the program has a network of 40 medical colleges in India, and 12,223 medical students have been exposed to the PSBH process. Over 50 projects have been completed in Kozhikode Medical College since the program was launched there in 2003.

India launched the first workshop for nurses in May 2004. Dr. C.R. Soman has incorporated PSBH into the curricula of 46 medical colleges. Ultimately, Dr. Soman plans to bring medical and nursing students together so they can learn to work collaboratively from the very beginning of their academic experience.
