Mali

Established: 1994

The Communications for Better Health® (CBH®) program began in 1994 in collaboration with Dr. Bob Gwadz of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The NIH donated computer equipment and the DHF provided databases and training to the library at the National School of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bamako, currently known as the Universite de Bamako Library, Faculte de Medecine de Pharmacie et d'Odonto-Stomatologie.

Digest Sante Mali is produced and distributed to physicians and health professionals working within medical, university, and public health settings. Digest Sante Mali, published in French, contains local and international health information that is collected and processed as part of the African Index Medicus (AIM) project. Topics include cholera, communicable diseases, dental/oral health, diarrhea, gastrointestinal disorders, malaria, and others. The database of the digest’s mailing list is used by Ministry of Health workers.

The CBH program in Mali also collaborates with international organizations, such as WHO, to provide health information and is involved with the development of the medical library Web site project. The medical library in Bamako works closely with the city’s National Library of Medicine to create a useful source of medical information online. Copies of each issue are included throughout the country, providing those in very remote areas with much-needed health information.
