Our Methodology

Problem Solving for Better Health^® (PSBH^®) is the Foundation’s methodology for solving health and social problems. DHF Director Dr. Barry H. Smith created PSBH out of concern that the people most impacted by the world's health problems often wait for solutions from the outside instead of becoming part of the process to identify solutions. DHF believes that with commitment and perseverance from all people involved, irrespective of educational, occupational, economic, or political status, any problem, no matter how large or small, can be solved. Therefore, DHF integrates the No Excuses^® approach into the PSBH methodology. Rather than make excuses for not achieving better health for more people, we, together with the people affected, need to determine what can be done. PSBH encourages active participation and commitment from all concerned, and places the responsibility for change upon the individual by enabling him or her to identify local solutions to local problems.

The PSBH process begins with a training workshop that helps participants define a problem, identify a solution, create a good plan of action, and take that action. Read more
